As the five states assembly elections counting is in progress, the earlier trends show that Trinmul Congress was leading over two hundred seats in West Bengal. Of course other four states i.e. Kerala, Assam, Pudducheri and Tamilnadu also went to the polls and their trends are also being declared. But, as the West Bengal assembly election had become a prestige point for both Mamta Banarjee and prime minister Narendra Modi, the results have dragged national attention. BJP is expected to retain Assam and Pudducheri while in Tamilnadu, DMK is going to win, but not as clean a sweep as was projected. Bengal people have once again shown trust in TMC as it is going to form the government once again with an absolute majority. BJP has got a severe jolt as it was considered as a prestigious fight for PM Modi and Union home minister Amit Shaha. At least for Bengal, Mamta has won and she has defeated Modi very comfortably. This has happened despite many TMC members, MLAs and right-hand men of Mamta have switched off to BJP before the elections. Still, BJP could not manage even a hundred plus seats. Of course, these are trends and not results. It will change national politics too much extent. The anti-BJP parties may unite under Mamta Banarjee as they may see an option to Modi. Of course, it is too premature to predict this. Mamta will now be eager to play a pivotal role in national politics. She might shift to Delhi to take on Modi or BJP. BJP has gained in West Bengal as the last election, it has got only three seats. It has got good seats compared to the last polls, but BJP did not succeed in wrestling Mamta Didi. If BJP wants to stop the Bengal trend in the country, it should concentrate its policies which are seen as anti-people by the majority of people. Bengal wins for Mamta is not her own. BJP’s policies and Modi’s handling of the Corona crisis have helped her a lot. Thousands of people have lost jobs in the country including West Bengal. Modi had declared twenty lakh Crores package for Corona affected. Not a single money has come in people’s pocket who has lost jobs and means of livelihood. What Mamta will do, nobody knows. But, people have a strong impression that Modi has betrayed them in fulfilling promises at the time of elections. This series of betraying has started from the decision of Note ban the decision was uncalled for and unnecessary. He forced people to queue up in lines for hours to exchange their money. The anger about all these incidents has been manifested through voting in W. Bengal. Still, Modi has huge popularity and so he has not lost states like Assam and Puducherry. But these states are very small. In Assam, Modi seems to override the anger against the NRC act to which some sections were opposing too much. Assam has a big problem of outsiders and the local people fear that they may capture political relevance in the coming days. BJP may have got the advantage of this act. In West Bengal, the Congress failure was writing on the wall and Congress leaders themselves were not interested in the results. But, it is very surprising that the left vote share has dwindled so fast that they may get only three seats. Once they have enjoyed power in the state for consecutive twenty-eight years. Left parties have faded away from the political horizon and they have a dimly presence only in Kerala. The election commission should be censured for its failure in allowing big rallies in poll-bound states due to which the Corona explosion we are seeing in the country now.
