Israel Burning

The conflict between Israel and Palestine is a legacy of several years and India is divided over the issue on religious lines. Indian right wing parties like BJP always support Israel military actions, but that is a reaction to Congress extreme minorities appeasement as the party has always been supportive of Palestine cause. Indira Gandhi had welcomed Yasir Arafat in the seventies and recognized Palestine’s claims of Gaza Strip and Golan Heights only to appease Indian Muslims. Israel has open support and all kind of help from America. So, Congress had become an enemy of America as Russia was strong then. After the fall of Russia, all power equations have changed from bottom to top. After BJP came to power, India and Israel have become good friends and co-operation between the two countries has increased to a significant level. The recent riots in Israel have brought to the fore all these points once again to the centre of policy. As India is fighting with Covid-19 which is claiming thousands of lives daily, India may not afford too much thinking about the international issues. But, Israel is not an only international issue for India but is more a sensitive issue. As India has a sizable population of Muslims, India can’t sit idle while Israel and Palestine are engaged in a heavy and cruel battle to claim supremacy for Jerusalem. The city is of extreme religious importance for all three religions Muslims, Jews and Christian as their religious founders have some or other connection with this land. This city is of immense importance for all three religions and the fight for this city has been continued for decades. Presently, deadly riots in Israel and the war in Gaza, triggered by yet another chapter in the Israeli drive to dispossess and oppress the Palestinians, is likely to evoke three kinds of responses: The indifferent, the imperial, the humanitarian. And alas, it looks like the imperial response, which has brought the region to this impasse, will triumph. The dominant response is going to be a moral indifference. The Palestinian cause has been forgotten or more or less abandoned. Instead of becoming the symbol of the unfinished tasks of decolonization, and a human rights catastrophe, the Palestinian question is now mostly an occasion to vent cynicism. Thousands of people have been killed, many planes have been hijacked, many people have been kept hostage for the cause in the seventies and now it has lost its relevance except for Palestinians. There is Israeli terrorism and Palestine terrorist organization Hamas is no far behind. There is the spectacle of civilians on both sides living in terror. Missiles raining down on Israeli cities on the one hand, by Hamas and the sheer brutality of Israeli defence forces operations on the other. There is the fanaticism of the Israeli right wing and there is the fanaticism of Hamas and Fatah, with bumbling politicians on both sides. In all this chaos, the Palestine cause has lost its direction. Indian Muslims express solidarity with dying Palestinians, may be on the basis of humanitarian grounds, but it can be seen on religious grounds and right wing parties immediately express their indirect support to Israel military actions. Palestine or Israelis, both lack a humanitarian point of view. In reality, there can not be distinguished between the cruelty of one group is good and another is wrong. Cruelty is anytime condemnable, perpetrated by anyone. We forget this basic principle of humanity and so we are divided even on the deaths of innocent people. The main reason for losing the importance of Palestine cause is this division on religious grounds. We are not treating dying Palestine civilians or Israel citizens as human beings, but Israelis or Palestinians. In recent riots, the same ideological division has come to the fore. As long as this will continue, the Israel Palestine conflict would continue for many more years
