Finally, Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa has resigned from his post. Today he met the Karnataka governor and tendered his resignation. There has been extreme opposition to Yediyurappa. Many BJP MLAs have expressed openly stiff opposition to BSY. Now the only curiosity is who will be successor of BSY and there are three to four names making rounds. As BSY is from Lingayat community which is extremely dominant in Karnataka and also very powerful, it is obvious that, his successor will also be from the Lingayat community. BJP has a strong rapport with the Lingayat community and it is its vote base. Congress has tried too harsh to break BJP’s cordial ties with Lingayat community, but every time it has failed. Till yesterday, BSY was hopeful of high command will ask him to continue on top post, but today he marched towards Raj Bhavan and tendered his resignation. BJP is obliged to appoint next chief minister from Lingayat community though BSY has said that, he would not pressurize for such decision on high command. BJP has made inroads into southern states and Karnataka and Pudducheri, it has grabbed power. So, losing Karnataka due to internal wrangling would not be affordable for the saffron party. Likewise, BJP can’t afford to lose vote base of Lingayat community. Already when the news of his possible resignation from the top post was spread, the Lingayat mutts, pontiffs and especially Veershaiv Lingayat community leaders started to garner support to BSY. They also threatened to go away from BJP. Considering all this, it is mandatory now for the BJP high command to select next CM from the same community. Some Lingayat leaders have also accused this is RSS conspiracy. This may be a pressure tactics by BSY himself, but as BJP high command has made its mind to remove him, nothing will work now for BSY. He has to resign according to BJP policy of removing politicians aged above 75 from active politics and BSY is now running above 75. So he has stepped down and there should not be any animosity in his community. One BJP MP has lambasted seers of Lingayat community who are adamant on continuation of BSY till his term ends. He says that, there is no scope for third party intervention and seers are not super high command. Though his point is valid, the rule of 75 years would not go down well with the community. The political activities in Karnataka have been intense now and the politicians are busy in lobbying in Delhi to grab the post. Sadanand Gouda, Murugan are front runners out of which Murugan is another influential Lingayat leader. Now the question is what political equations will take place after his resignation? BJP has strong opposition from Congress in this state and so it has to take the decision about appointing successor to BSY very carefully. Any wrong decision may cost BJP power in the state. The new chief minister will have great challenge to keep the saffron party stronger and robust. As like every party, BJP is also facing faction fighting in Karnataka. But, it has to find ways to end it. Congress is fighting to find solution in Rajasthan and Punjab to end internal wrangling, same challenge is BJP facing in Karnataka. In that case, both the parties are on the same side of coin. BSY is the only BJP minister in Karnataka so far. He has served on the post for four times. The irony for BSY is that, today BJP is celebrating completion of two years of power in the state and BSY is outgoing now. It is undoubtedly that, political situation in the state will take a new turn now. Only time will tell if it will be favourable or unfavourable to BJP.
