Ahmedabad serial blasts: Court finds 49 accused guilty

Ahmedabad : The court has convicted 49 out of 78 accused in the 2008 serial blasts case in Ahmedabad. In this case, 28 accused were acquitted on the basis of suspicion. The court will sentence all the culprits tomorrow morning at 10.30 am. Public Prosecutor Sudhir Brahmbhatt said that statements of more than 1100 witnesses were recorded in the serial bomb blasts case. More than 500 charge sheets have been filed. Eight accused in the case are still absconding, some of whom are in Pakistan.

On July 26, 2008, a series of 21 bombings took place in 20 areas of the city, killing 56 people and injuring over 200. In this case 20 FIRs were registered in Ahmedabad and 15 in Surat. In the preliminary investigation 99 accused were named. Of these, 82 were arrested, while eight accused are still absconding. The 77 accused in the Ahmedabad serial blasts case are lodged in various jails in seven states of the country. In which 49 are accused in Sabarmati Central Jail in Ahmedabad, 10 in Bhopal Jail in Madhya Pradesh, 4 in Taloja Jail in Mumbai, 5 in Bengaluru Jail in Karnataka, 6 in Kerala Jail, 2 in Jaipur Jail and 1 in Delhi Jail.

After the verdict, a tight police cordon has been formed outside the special court. All types of vehicles including cars in the parking lot were checked. There are 1 DCP, 2 ACP and 100 policemen present in the court premises. Only the lawyers of the case are being allowed in the court. Police is continuously patrolling the sensitive areas of Ahmedabad city.
