Think practical

There was no logic in banning common people from traveling in local trains from day one due to Corona pandemic. Because, the state government had allowed BEST and ST buses to ply everywhere. So, it is not correct to assume that, Corona virus spreads from only local trains. Now, the government is contemplating to allow fully vaccinated people to travel in local trains. This is practical thinking as many people have lost their jobs as well as livelihood due to confined to homes since two years. Maha Vikas Aghadi government should show some leniency to such people and allow them to join their work places. At the same time, it must not be forgotten that, the danger of Covid -19 has not completely vanished. So, while permitting only fully vaccinated people to travel in local trains is a good decision but it should be implemented immediately. With the assumption that, fully vaccinated people possess less risk of transmitting or being infected by Corona virus. With the arrival of vaccines, more Indians have some protection now. But a rough extrapolation of the findings suggests 400 million people are still vulnerable — this number alone is higher than the population of the United States. That means, out of one hundred and thirty crores Indian population, hardly one third population is vaccinated. The target is so huge that, more than two years may be gone when entire Indian population will be vaccinated. Still it is not clear whether this figure is of people who have got two doses or one dose. The government rightly underlined this fact several times on Tuesday to appeal to people to remain careful and avoid any sort of gathering, whether social, religious or political. Of course, Indians will not heed to these appeals as past experience shows people are averse to avoid crowd and meeting people. Even the fear of getting infection did not persuade them to do so. The latest nationwide survey for Covid-19 antibodies suggests that two out of three Indians may have some form of protection from the corona virus. The government’s senior experts said on Tuesday that the sample size of close to 29,000 people included people who did and did not receive a vaccine. Among the unvaccinated group, the prevalence of antibodies was sixty two percent. Overall, including vaccine recipients, it was 67.6%. In contrast, in the last such study, from the same 70 districts, the prevalence rate was 24.1%. The jump is unsurprising since the earlier study was held prior to the devastating second wave of Covid-19 infections. Such studies, known as seroprevalence surveys, carry several important caveats. First, can the study be extrapolated to estimate the overall spread of the virus in India? Both Balram Bhargava, the head of the Indian Council of Medical Research, and Niti Aayog member VK Paul cautioned that these numbers cannot be taken to fit a particular city or village — the study, they said, gives mostly an overall picture across the country. Second, does simply testing positive for antibodies mean protection? The answer is yes; antibodies do mean protection. Third, the longevity of antibodies, especially among those who were infected, is likely to wane in the next few months. But there is another way of looking at the number. A rough extrapolation of the findings suggests 400 million people are still vulnerable — this number alone is higher than the population of the United States. At present, many regions of the country are logging numbers last seen in February. That is when India became complacent. It must not make the same mistake again since this time, if it is able to drive up vaccination rates, the country may well be in the home stretch of the war against Covid-19. In any case, the fear of third wave is looming large on India and especially Maharashtra, because it has bore the brunt of earlier two waves. So, any decision should be taken with utmost care and at the same time, keep in mind the hardships people are facing due to loss of job or working the half salary. The governments both at the centre and in State, should think practically and ensure minimum loss to the people.
