Justice UU Lalit appointed as 49th Chief Justice of India to replace NV Ramana

New Delhi : President Draupadi Murmu has appointed Justice UU Lalit as the next Chief Justice of the country. On August 27, Justice UU Lalit will take over as Chief Justice. The Law Ministry had written a letter to the Chief Justice urging him to recommend the name of his successor. After this, Chief Justice NV Ramana recommended the name of Justice UU Lalit as his successor to the Central Government on July 4. Justice Ramana is retiring on August 26. On August 27, Justice Lalit will take the oath as the Chief Justice, and his term will be till November 8. He is currently the second-most senior judge on the Supreme Court.
Justice Lalit was born on November 9, 1957. He started practising law in June 1983. After practising in the Bombay High Court till 1985, he shifted to Delhi in January 1986. He was promoted to Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court in April 2004.He was appointed as the Special Public Prosecutor of the CBI in the 2G case. He was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court on August 13, 2014. He has been a part of the bench that delivered several landmark judgments like Triple Talaq.
