Unreasonable demands

Buoyant by repeal of farm laws, the farmers organizations have become more and more aggressive and demanding unreasonable things. As every party needs farmers votes and their number is more than urban voters, parties have no courage to tell farmers that their demand for MSP guarantee law is unreasonable. For one year farmers organizations ran the agitation and after forced Modi government to bow down to take back farm laws, their courage has increased. They now demand MSP guarantee law be made which is not possible for any government. The reason is obvious. Their demand to include farmers representative in the committee to be formed on MSP or Minimum Support Price is very reasonable and acceptable. But if they are adamant on to make a law on MSP guarantee, it is not possible. Because, any government can’t buy all the grains they have produced.  On the other hand, the farmers are not ready to change crop pattern and so there is excess production of wheat and rice which is enough to feed entire world. It is good to hear or read that, the purchase of farm produce should be under MSP law. No government can purchase all the grains produced by farmers and can’t force traders to purchase grains on the price decided by farmers. The reason is private traders would like to import grains instead of buying at high price. The farmers are no doubt most important for the country and the farm sector has been helpful to survive Indian economy in Corona pandemic period. But this does not mean that, their every demand is reasonable and should be accepted. Political parties votes hungry and so they do not oppose farmers unreasonable demands. But, people with wisdom can see the wrong logic in farmers’ demand. In entire world, the prices of food are decreasing and if a law is made about MSP prices, no traders will be come forward to buy  farm produce and in the end, the loser will be farmers. The government will not be able to purchase all the farm produce. Another fault of farmers is that they are not ready to change crop cultivation pattern. They are producing excessive wheat and rice which is not needed for the country. At present, the country has so much rice that it is enough to feed entire world. The experts like Swaminathan gives sermons to the government about how to uplift farmers, but do not tell farmers their habit of  cultivation of specific crops is creating problems for themselves. If farmers are insisting on purchase of grains under MSP law, they should be told that, the government has no other option than to purchase grains in excess of need.   The warehouses of government are flooded with food, extra purchase is not possible.  If it will be forced to purchase unnecessary grains, there will not be fund for subsidies and other development works. Farmers may not understand this, but farmers leaders know it, but they want to create hurdles in the way of government. The government is already giving subsidy on purchase of food beyond its capacity.  World Trade Organization has taken objection on present subsidy, if it is increased, export will be impossible. It will cost economy dearly. The farmers leaders have taken a toll of eighty six percent of farmers interest. They will have to understand ground situation and use their discretion. They should not take government as granted. For political parties, talking in the interest of farmers garner votes. But only farmers votes will not guarantee win in the elections. Political parties should also show courage and tell farmers about their unreasonable demands.
