Two Dead, Several Injured in Madurai Chithirai Festival Stampede; CM Stalin Announces Ex-gratia

Madurai : According to the police, at least two people died and eight others were injured in a stampede at Lord Kallazhagar's entrance to the Vaigai river festival in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The injured were taken to Rajaji Hospital, which is run by the government.

Following the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his heartfelt condolences to the victims' families and immediately directed that the CM's General Relief Fund provide Rs 5 lakhs each to the families of the two deceased, Rs 2 lakhs to one seriously injured person, and Rs 1 lakhs each to those who suffered minor injuries.

The bodies of the two people who died, a middle-aged man and a woman, have yet to be identified. The district administration has established a helpline number, 9498042434, for reporting any information about the deceased.

Last week, the annual 'Chithirai' festival began with the traditional temple flag hoisting at Meenakshi Amman Temple. Chithirai Thiruvizha, Meenakshi Kalyanam, or Meenakshi Thirukalyanam is the celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar, also known as Chithirai Thirukalyanam.
