TN forest dept nabs farmer over tuskar electrocution

Chennai : Officials from the Tamil Nadu forest department arrested a banana plantation farm owner, M. Manoharan, in connection with the electrocution of a wild elephant on his property two months ago.

On the morning of February 12, a male elephant aged 12 to 15 years old was discovered dead on the farm, with its trunk in contact with an iron cable that had been erected around the farm for electric fencing.

Manoharan, 57, was apprehended by a special team from the Coimbatore Forest Division near a bus stand in Pannimadai around 6.30 a.m. on Monday, according to officials but managed to escape.

Manoharan and his son Naresh were on the run and had applied for anticipatory bail petitions in the district court, which had been denied. Manoharan had recently returned to Coimbatore from Karnataka. The forest department arrested the father-son duo under Section 9 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act (Prohibition of Hunting).
