Ranveer Singh refuses to consider 83 as a box office flop, explains why the film did not work

Ranveer Singh, who is promoting his upcoming film Jayeshbhai Jordaar, talks candidly about his previous box office failure. Talking about Kabir Khan's very ambitious film 83.

83 was released on 24 December 2021 and the film earned only 102 crores at the box office.

Made on a huge budget of about 150 crores, the film flopped badly at the box office. Talking about the film in a recent interview, Ranveer Singh said - How can you call 83 a flop film? The film earned 200 crores worldwide. And this earning happened in the midst of the third wave of Corona. So you can consider this film as bad timing.

It is worth noting that before the release of 83, Sooryavanshi ended the drought at the box office and it was believed that this Kabir Khan film would bring a tsunami at the box office. But in the last week of December, the third wave of corona came rapidly in India and in the meantime people were afraid to go to the theater. This was the reason that this film could not earn much.

slower than opening

83, which released on December 24, had disappointed with the opening itself. The film had an opening of only 12 crores. On the weekend, the film earned 71 crores in the first week while earning a total of 47 crores. The total lifetime collection of the film stopped at 102 crores. And since the budget of the film was very wide, it flopped badly at the box office.

Kabir Khan was also disappointed by the failure

Significantly, Kabir Khan was also very disappointed with the failure of 83. This film was ready for two years but due to Corona, the film could not be released. When the film was released, it was believed that it would earn a lot. Kabir Khan also said in an interview, We had released this film after a lot of planning but no plan is working with Corona.

audience's love

However, 83 got a lot of love from the audience. The film starred Ranveer Singh in the role of Kapil Dev and once again told the story of the 1983 World Cup. That's why people's feelings were attached to the film. Ranveer Singh considers this film very close to his heart. At the same time, Kabir Khan also believed that people gave a lot of love to the film. It was just luck that the film could not do wonders at the box office.

Collision with Pushpa

However, the failure of 83 cannot be attributed solely to Corona. Two films released before 83 - Pushpa and Spiderman No Way Home got a lot of audience in Hindi. While Pushpa earned 106 crores in Hindi, Spiderman No Way Home earned 202 crores in all languages. Both these films gave a tough competition to 83 at the box office.

cost of crores

15 crores were given to 15 members of the original Indian cricket team that won the World Cup for 83. At the same time, only Kapil Dev was given Rs 5 crore for sharing his story. Kapil Dev was also seen doing a cameo in the film. After Suryavanshi, it was believed that 83 will also open on a smoky basis. Sooryavanshi had an opening of 26 crores on Diwali. Whereas 83 could give an opening of only 12 crores.

Ranveer had reduced the fee?

83 was produced by Reliance Entertainment, Deepika Padukone with Kabir Khan, Sajid Nadiadwala, Madhu Mantena, Sheetal Talwar. That's why Ranveer Singh reduced his fee of 48 crores by half and signed 83 for 20 crores. However, Ranveer Singh has taken a share of the profits in the film.

Earning from OTT

However, 83 got good OTT deals and this is the reason why the film will not be making losses at the box office. 83 got good deals from both Netflix and Disney Hotstar and the film is available on both these OTT platforms. The film has sold over 100 crores on both the platforms.
