Barcelona could not be in contention to sign Erling Haaland, it was impossible at financial level: Xavi

New Delhi : Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez on Tuesday conceded that the LaLiga giants were not in contention to sign Erling Haaland, saying it was 'impossible' at a financial level after Manchester City confirmed on Tuesday that they had reached an agreement to sign the Norwegian striker from Borussia Dortmund.

Barcelona have been going through financial struggles but the Catalan giants were reportedly in the race along with Real Madrid to sign Erling Haaland. Haaland's value on the transfer market skyrocketed, thanks to his goal-scoring form with Dortmund. The 21-year-old has scored 85 goals in 88 games for Dortmund since his debut in January 2020. He was last season's top scorer in the Champions League as well as the UEFA Nations League. This season he has 21 goals in the Bundesliga from 20 starts. ""It's what I was saying yesterday. I wish (Erling) Haaland the best. We could not be in contention. At a financial level it was impossible. In this moment it is impossible to compete at a financial level with that kind of money. That's how things went. So, I wish him the best," Xavi.
