It’s too late

Congress has always habitual of going late into action mode. Due to its late action, Congress has lost Goa state when it was in a position to form the government. But, due to inactiveness of Digvijay Singh, the grand old party lost a small but important state. The same lethargy has been seen in the case of Uttar Pradesh. Earlier next year, the state goes to the polls and it is not necessary to mention how the state is important for national parties like Congress and BJP. But, Congress was not seen anywhere in the state in election mode. BJP already having started to prepare strategy and meetings with the aim of winning the elections, Congress was seen taking nap. Suddenly, it seems that the party has waken up and now Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is touring the state from 16 July. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is expected to finally reach Lucknow on July 16 to launch the poll campaign of the Congress party with just six months left for the elections in Uttar Pradesh. This will be over one-and-a-half years after she last visited the UP capital where the Congress is hoping for a revival of its electoral fortunes. If a party is serious about performing well in the state, the leaders like Rahul and Priyanka should have visited Lucknow frequently. Remember the last trip of Priyanka to Lucknow was one and half year ago. This shows Congress's lethargy to go in work mode. Congress does not seem to come out of those days where one or two election rallies of senior leaders were enough to win the state. Now, Congress has nothing to lose in the state. In such a situation, the leaders should visit Uttar Pradesh frequently and start an indirect campaign. It has a vast arsenal against chief minister Yogi Adityanath like the inept handling of the Corona crisis, the piles of dead bodies at the banks of the Ganga river, the new proposed population policy, etc. Of course, the population policy is good for the entire country so Congress will not get any point to oppose it. But it can consolidate minorities' votes on this issue. In 2017, Congress did not heed the advice of election strategist Prashant Kishore to declare Priyanka as chief minister candidate for Uttar Pradesh. Would that have clicked or not, nobody can tell now. Priyanka was finally ‘launched’ in Uttar Pradesh ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when after a mega road show in Lucknow with her, Rahul Gandhi said at the Congress office in Lucknow that while the party had modest expectations in UP in 2019, the real hope the party had was for the 2022 assembly elections. As it turned out, 2019 too turned into a disaster for Congress in UP as Rahul lost from Amethi, Priyanka did not contest and the only seat Congress won was Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli. After that disaster, Priyanka did not choose to stay put in Lucknow but preferred parachute visits to the state. Like going to Sonbhadra after the killing of tribals two years ago, her last visit to Lucknow in December 2019 to meet those injured in the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests, her visit to Hathras last October to meet the family of a gang rape and murder victim and a series of Kisan Mahapanchayats she did in western UP in February-March this year besides taking a dip in the Sangam in Prayagraj in February. In case of Hathras, the visit by Priyanka was backfired because BJP had valid point then that she did not visit Rajasthan where such an incident had taken place and the state is ruled by her own party. Priyanka has failed in boosting Congress chances and so it will be a gamble for the party but it will have to take the risk again. The grand old party has no other option as the leadership quality of Rahul Gandhi has always been tested and it has given negative answers. One thing is sure. In case of preparing election strategy, Congress is far behind BJP which is its drawback.
