Congress will sit on reports

A five-member Congress panel on Tuesday submitted its assessment on the party's losses in the just-concluded assembly elections to party chief Sonia Gandhi and put forward several recommendations and suggestions to strengthen the organization. Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan who heads the group said he had submitted the report on the party's performance in Kerala, Assam and Puducherry and that the assessment for West Bengal was underway. He added that the report on West Bengal is being prepared and discussions with party leaders are still going on. Besides Chavan, the group has Salman Khurshid, Manish Tewari, Vincent H Pala and Jothi Mani. The Congress had set up the five-member group to evaluate the party's performance in assembly polls in Kerala, Assam, West Bengal and Puducherry. Congress high command will do nothing on this report is writing on a wall. The practice of submitting reports on defeat has been a legacy of Congress party since many years. But, the party has not learned any lessons from immense reports prepared and submitted earlier. They have been only a document gathering dust in cupboards in party headquarters. Actually, the reasons for Congress debacle in recently concluded five state assembly elections are obvious and small child also can tell. Faction fighting, the leadership crisis, the trust deficit about Congress in people, lackluster Congress president and Rahul Gandhi who always criticize PM Modi without assuming any official position are some of the basic reasons for the defeat of Congress. What is the need of the committee and its document is just a futile experiment for the party. But, the party has to play such drama as it shows party is doing something and secondly, the senior leaders get some job otherwise who are sitting idle.  In West Bengal, there is one fact that can’t be denied that, in fear of BJP, all the minorities especially Muslims come together to stand behind Mamta Banarjee as they felt that only Didi will protect them from BJP onslaught. Congress had a traditional Muslim voters base which has eroded to nil now. Why the Muslims have lost confidence in the party is to be investigated. The minorities have opted for Trunmuil Congress as the best alternative to Congress. This is the reason for the defeat of Congress is not only West Bengal but other states also. In case of Kerala, the same thing happened as a sizable population of Christians stood behind left front and not Congress. Actually, Congress has to now think if minorities are not trusting it, the party should not bother for it. The party should play Hindu vote politics openly instead of clandestinely. To attract Hindu votes, Rahul Gandhi visit temples wearing Janve or sacred thread characteristic of Brahmin cast only. But, such gimmicks do not attract Hindu votes as they have a fixed and robust alternative in the form of BJP. Minorities do not trust Congress and so the grand old party has found itself in a fix. It has lost both vote banks and another factor that has cast the party in Bengal or any other state for that matter is Congress's handshake with Shivsena in Maharashtra for only grabbing power. Congress traditional voters do not like the party should work in tandem with Sena and so they have expressed their anger from EVMs. But, only the party leaders do not accept this fact. Congress should take quick corrective action on this report so that it can be prepared to fight the next elections in four states. These states include Punjab and Goa in which Congress has a good chance of winning the elections.
